Takiwasi Center is a Peruvian non-profit civil association, located in the Amazonian region of San Martin. It originated from a research work begun in 1986 and dedicated to basic and applied clinical research into the therapeutic potential of Traditional Amazonian Medicine in the treatment of mental health problems and addictions. The Center was officially founded in 1992 and since then it has contributed to improve health conditions of the population and to the conservation of the environment, developing innovative techniques and intervention models that preserve traditional Amazonian knowledge and articulate it with modern science and technology. The Center is led by an interdisciplinary and intercultural team of medical doctors, psychologists, indigenous therapists, researchers, engineers, pharmaceutical chemists and development experts that coordinate the activity of the association in 3 main areas of work: addiction treatment and mental health care; health research and dissemination; environment and productive development.Takiwasi Center is a Therapeutic Community recognized by the Peruvian State, dedicated to the treatment of people with drug addictions and mental health problems. The therapeutic proposal of the Center is based on an innovative protocol that combines the knowledge and practices of Traditional Amazonian Medicine with modern psychology and medicine. The protocol is defined by a healing tripod that includes 3 complementary therapeutic workspaces that mutually provide feedback to each other: coexistence and ergo-therapy; psychotherapy; medicinal plants.This original approach to mental health has been studied in more than 50 international research projects, articulating an interdisciplinary academic community, composed of scientific institutions of global excellence.
